Coming to you today from my sick bed, where a bad cold has had me down and out for the last couple of days. Anyone else feel like they get sick every time they ride an airplane? I came back from a conference in Orlando last week and in about 24 hours started feeling the tell-tale itch in my throat. Now I’m just a sad pile of phlegm and bones, laying on my couch watching British period dramas with my cat. It could be worse, I guess.
It’s been a while since I last posted, so here are the life highlights you missed since then:
- It is officially Fall in the District of Columbia. I did my final closet transition last weekend after getting home from Florida, putting away all my warm weather clothes and pulling out my sweaters, boots, and scarves like an L.L. Bean catalogue incarnate.
- As hard as I tried, I did not get tickets to Taylor Swift’s Lover Fest. I waited in “line” (digitally) for about five hours on Monday during the pre-sale, and then for about an hour on Thursday during the general sale. No dice. I feel like she is testing us. Taylor, what do you want? What sacrifice may I make??
- On Thursday night I attended an information session for a graduate program that I plan to apply to. This is big for me because my experience as an undergraduate was pretty traumatic, and between my abysmal GPA and my big ‘ole pile of student loan debt, I pretty much assumed I would never even attempt to go to grad school. But after watching my husband bloom as a later-in-life undergrad, I realized that education is one of the most important investments you can make in yourself, and I think I’m at the point now where I’m ready to move on to the next chapter and the next challenge. More on this in a future post probably.
- I got my hair done yesterday for the first time in 12 weeks and I’m not sure how I feel about it. Instead of going full platinum again, I’ve been growing out my roots so that we could do a more blended, shadowy look with foils. I think I like it, but the highlights came out a little too yellow for my taste, and the cut of the bob is shorter than I’m used to. I think I’ll settle into a style routine with it as it continues to grow out, but you know how new hair can sometimes make you feel like a complete stranger to yourself.
Now, what you’re really here for: stuff I wore this week.
Outfit details: Turtleneck | Chinos | Belt | Boots
Outfit details: Coat (no longer available, designer here) | Dress (thrifted, similar here) | Boots | Lipstick (wearing the shade “Maple”)
Outfit details: Henley (Tradlands, no longer available) | Jeans | Sneakers
Outfit details: Blouse (thifted, similar here) | Skirt | Belt | Boots | Tights (can’t find a link to buy these online, but I always buy Hanes Silky Opaque Tights at CVS)
Outfit details: Sweater | Jeans | Sneakers | Tote
FYI, Everlane just dropped a lot of new stuff into Choose What You Pay, which, if you’re unfamiliar, is what Everlane calls its sale section. (Does anyone ever choose to pay more than the lowest available price? I sure don’t.) There’s a lot of cashmere, some alpaca and cotton sweaters, and a ton of go-weave available at really good prices. It also sometimes goes under the radar, but the men’s CWYP section is always really well priced, and nearly all of the pieces there could easily be unisex.
P.s. Thank you for making it to the end of this post. Your reward is this picture of me at the salon yesterday protecting my thoughts from the government.

Oooooh, grad school. I am a big fan – though I haven’t gotten any grades back yet, so we’ll see how I feel after midterm season. Reach out if you want to chat about anything!

Hi! I’m what you would probably call a “lurker” since I’ve read your blog for a whiiillleeee (big fan! you inspired me to create my own wardrobe spreadsheet!), but have never commented. *insert yikes-face emoji* … do those work here? 😬 Anyway, I was also a later-in-life undergrad (after being a normal-in-life undergrad who earned a pretty useless degree) and am now a later-later-in-life grad student. All of that to say: you can do it! And if I can help with navigating the process in any way, I’d be happy to do so. 🙂

Wow, thank you Amanda! Everything about this comment means so much to me. It’s so encouraging to hear other people talk about their non-traditional paths through education – definitely makes me feel more motivated and confident! We can all do it!

I literally get sick EVERY. TIME. I ride an airplane! Also, real talk: I never pay anything but the lowest price listed on Everlane’s Choose What You Pay items. I can’t imagine why anyone would choose to pay more??

Glad I’m not alone! I wish I knew of some magic tincture I could drink before getting on the plane that would keep me protected from the recycled air!
