What I Wore | Outfits This Week

It was a weird week for weather, with one day topping out at close to 100 degrees and others barely breaking 70. But Capital Weather Gang has officially declared summer over and fall begun, so this morning I spent a good deal of time going through the clothes in my cold-weather storage suitcase and updating my wardrobe for fall. I pulled out a lot of things that I realized I don’t want to keep – stuff that doesn’t fit, old fast fashion that hasn’t aged well, and things that clash with my blonde hair – and I made a big pile of clothes to get rid of that is currently waiting in limbo on my couch to be sold and/or donated.

I didn’t manage to get pictures of everything I wore this week, but I do have a few favorite outfits to show you. We’ve been trying to go to the gym before work in the morning (which I deeply hate but my husband reminds me that I become a pointy throwing star of anxiety if I do not exercise regularly), and so I’m not always home when there is daylight to take a picture by. Here’s what I wore on those days when I put my lazy foot down and stayed home until the sun came up:

This is much more casual than I’d typically wear to work, but I had to get a shipment out to a conference that’s happening in Orlando next week, and so I needed an outfit that could withstand lots of running around, bending over, lifting things, setting up trade show materials, etc. If you’re looking at this and thinking “gee, I would have worn pants to do all that,” I get it, but I personally feel more comfortable and less constricted in a comfy skirt or dress.

Easily my favorite outfit of the week. I was so excited to share this that I posted it on my personal Instagram account, which I hardly ever do for fear that I will give in to the siren song of the like machine and be tempted to reactivate my fashion insta. I didn’t get that far this time, but I seriously considered it!

This sweater is from Tradlands, a brand that I have worked with consistently over the last year (and one of the few brands that didn’t dump me when I deleted my Instagram account, FYI) and I am so, so glad they let me try it out. They released their first cotton fisher sweater last year, and tbh I was so jealous of all the affiliates who got one that I sustained some very petty emotions that I am not proud of today.

But now I’m glad that I waited, because this year they updated the fit to be more true-to-size, and they added new colors and fabric blends. This color is called “quail” which is absolutely delightful, and it’s a 90% cotton 10% poly blend. I’m sure that the 10% poly is in there to improve the strength of the garment and help it keep its shape, but if you don’t love synthetic blends in your clothes, they do have at least one color offering that’s 100% cotton.

Last year I invested in a lot of cashmere and wool-blend sweaters and blazers because I thought it would help keep me warm in the cold, harsh winter. I was right about that, but I forgot about how stuffy wool can be during the transitional period between fall and winter, and I’m realizing now that cotton sweaters are the answer to that problem. I can get a lot more mileage out of cotton because it’s layerable and not limited to just the coldest winter months.

I do have one very important note about the Fisher Sweater: It. Is. Expensive.

I know that $227 for a sweater is a lot of money to part with. Tradlands is an heirloom quality brand, and their prices reflect that quality. If you’re on a budget, this is a piece to be purchased only after careful thought and consideration. Yesterday was our first true day of fall in DC and I demanded to be taken to the city for an activity. We ended up at the National Postal Museum, which is actually very cool, and then a rooftop bar in the neighborhood where we used to live. I was cozy and comfortable in this getup, and again, thanks to the cotton sweater, I didn’t overheat when the sun came out.

Okay, admittedly I did not wear this outfit anywhere except my living room. This blazer is one of the things that I pulled out of cold weather storage that’s currently on the chopping block. I got it last fall, but it’s always felt a little overwhelming, so I was experimenting with different ways to style it. This make-believe outfit was really cute, but I’m still not sure I’m sold on keeping the blazer. I’m always drawn to oversized blazers, but as a petite woman they can be way too much on my frame. I’ve had my eye on some more traditional fitting options on Poshmark and Eileen Fisher Renew, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
